Relationships are not easy

by Colleen
(South Africa)

I wanted to know more about healing relationships and would have been better off had i known this before my relationship hit rock bottom. My partner and I have been in a long distance relationship for a long time and when we finally decided to change the setup each had already built a protection wall and it seemed to be up against each other. We couldnt sit and talk about a solutions for the challenges we faced. So if one of us disagreed on anything then we drop the talk until we didnt have anything active in our life together. I wish I knew what to do then.

Fear of intimacy...
by: Don

Distance is the antidote for a fear of intimacy (Not physical intimacy, but emotional closeness) This usually comes from painful experiences with intimacy, especially those in early childhood.

Distancer's usually have been "engulfed" or "felt "Swallowed up" and over-whelmed by a parent...which creates a fear of being trapped when coming too close.

It sounds like maybe you two have had that rare combination of being two distancer's instead of the typical distancer and a pursuer relationship.

Good luck and let us know if you have any specific questions.
