You may remember where the Lost & Found was.

Every school had one.

Sometimes it was a cardboard box beneath a table. Sometimes a closet near the office. Sometimes a wire basket filled with sweatshirts, lunchboxes, scarves, gloves, and the occasional shoe whose disappearance seemed impossible to explain.

Most kids went there because they had lost something.

Some of us went because we needed something.

A jacket when it got colder than we expected.
A pair of gloves.
A pencil.
Maybe a lunchbox that could replace the paper bag we were tired of carrying.

You learned to look without looking too interested.

You learned to wait until no one was paying attention.

You learned that there were things in the world that other children could lose and apparently not miss.

That was astonishing.

A sweatshirt could disappear and nobody came running back for it.
A perfectly good pair of gloves could sit there for weeks.
Someone could forget a lunchbox.
Someone could have enough that losing something did not become an emergency.

Many of us understood the Lost & Found. We understood the things inside it, too. They had belonged somewhere once.

Now they were waiting.

So we could relate in some strange way.

At home, other kinds of scarcity may have existed.

Sometimes it was money.
Sometimes food.
Sometimes attention.
Sometimes affection.
Sometimes the simple feeling that there was an adult nearby who could handle what was happening.

In families affected by addiction, dysfunction, trauma, mental illness, rage, neglect, or chronic instability, children become excellent observers.

We notice footsteps.
The sound of a door closing.
The way a parent puts down a glass.
The silence between two adults.
A face changing across the room.
We learn things nobody teaches in school.
How to tell whether tonight is a good night.
How to disappear without leaving.

How to become helpful.

Funny.
Easy.
Quiet.
Successful.
Invisible.

We learn not to need too much because sometimes needing something makes things worse.

So we improvise.
We take care of ourselves.
We take care of other people.
We make do.

And adults often admire us for it.

“You’re so mature.”
“You’re so independent.”
“You never cause any trouble.”

What they may not see is that independence can be something a child develops when dependence doesn’t feel safe.

Years later, the Lost & Found looks different.

It may look like a relationship in which we accept very little and call it enough.
A job where we work twice as hard because usefulness still feels like safety.
A friendship in which we listen endlessly but cannot say, “I’m having a hard time.”
It may look like apologizing before asking a question.
Feeling guilty when someone helps us.
Panicking when someone is disappointed.
Staying too long.
Leaving too soon.
Trying to read someone’s face before we decide how we feel.

Or sitting in a therapist’s office and being asked a surprisingly difficult question:

“What do you need?”

For some of us, there is no answer.

Not because we don’t have needs.

Because we learned so early not to know them.

Healing can begin in moments so small that nobody else would notice them.

You realize you are uncomfortable. And instead of telling yourself it doesn’t matter, you move.
You are tired. And you rest before everything is finished.
Someone hurts you. And instead of immediately explaining their behavior to yourself, you notice that you are hurt.
Someone offers help. And you do not automatically say, “No, I’m fine.”
You miss someone. You say so.
You are afraid they will leave. Eventually, maybe, you say that too.

These can seem like ordinary things.

For a person who survived by having very few needs, they are not ordinary at all. They are acts of recovery.

There comes a moment when you begin to understand something the child standing beside the Lost & Found could not possibly have known.

Needing does not make you needy.
Wanting does not make you selfish.
Receiving does not put you in debt.

And love is not something you have to earn by being useful, agreeable, impressive, quiet, or easy to keep.

That realization does not erase the past.

Some days, an old feeling arrives before the present moment has a chance to explain itself.

We still enter rooms already scanning.
Still silences that feel dangerous.
Still moments when asking for what we need feels much harder than going without.

Recovery does not mean we never return to those places.

It means we begin to recognize where we are. And we know more ways home.

I sometimes think about all those things in the Lost & Found.

The sweaters.
The backpacks.
The single gloves.
The things somebody left behind.

As children, some of us spent years quietly searching through whatever was available, hoping to find something that might keep us warm.

Now the work is different.

Now we are learning that we do not have to wait for something to be discarded before we are allowed to have it.

We can ask.
We can choose.
We can leave what does not belong to us.
We can grieve what we should have received and didn’t.
We can discover what we like, what we want, what we believe, and whom we trust.

There is help, and there is hope:

If you grew up in a home affected by alcoholism, addiction, chaos, emotional neglect, or family dysfunction, you may have learned to survive by hiding your feelings, becoming overly responsible, rescuing others, staying numb, or trying to control everything around you.

Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families — ACA / ACoA — is a recovery fellowship for people who are beginning to understand how childhood survival patterns can continue shaping adult relationships, self-worth, boundaries, and emotional life. You are not alone, and you are not broken. What once helped you survive may now be asking to heal.
