Part 1: "All the World is a Stage, Men and Women Merely Players"
How can the world be a stage? Start by looking around at anything that looks real. Notice that at the most basic level, it is nothing more than energy. A mass of swirling electrons, protons, and neutrons. Those swirling particles make up An atom, atoms bond into molecules, molecules bind into compounds, and so forth until we have matter. Even our bodies are made of energy and they run on electrical-chemical energy.
So if we could really see everything in the world at the most basic level, it would feel like we're in The Matrix movie. At least that's what we know to be true in the study of physics. Now if we stay with that most basic level of atomic particles, we find something interesting at work. There are four fundamental forces identified in physics: Gravitational Force, Electromagnetic Force, Strong Nuclear, and Weak Nuclear Force.
The weak nuclear force is the only one that defies several of the laws of physics. It is the only one out of all four forces that does that. And the weak nuclear force is what holds all the protons electrons and neutrons together in an atom. It also is the force that powers our Sun.
For my purposes in this discussion, I just want to point out a few things about protons and electrons. Protons are positively charged and they are located in the nucleus of an atom along with the neutrons which have no charge. Protons have a like positive charge. Anyone who has ever played with magnets knows that when we try to push like-charge sides together, they repel each other. Electrons swirling around the nucleus, are like negative charges. Physics tells us this shouldn't be happening. They should be exploding apart!
Those protons and neutrons are contained in a space called the nucleus. It's not a structure so it's not a container it's simply a space and the only thing holding those like charges together is the weak nuclear force. The same is true for the electrons, they shouldn't have anything to do with each other and the whole thing should explode apart. But the weak nuclear force defies physics by holding them all together.Â
This is the line where we cross over into quantum physics, which is something I call spiritual physics. Science calls that energy the weak nuclear force because they don't have any other way to explain it. (There are lots of theories, but the realm of quantum physics is unknown apart from theories.)
I can only speak of what I know, share what I have seen, and teach what I have learned. For me, all of this has come through the lens of Christianity. It is my sincere hope that, even if your lens is different, somehow these observations of mine will be useful to you. ~ Don Carter MSW, LCSW
The Bible has a way to explain it... in the first chapter of John, it says, "By him, all things were made, and apart from him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men." (John 1:3-4)Â
And in John 1:9-11, "That was the TRUE light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own and his own received him not."
Now, what is light? Light is energy. In Colossians 1-17 it says, "He is before all things, and in him, all things hold together." ( written in present tense) if you look around the room that you're in right now you will notice that there are a lot of "things". According to this verse, those things are ALL held together by Him! That would make him the so-called "weak nuclear force". That would also explain why atomic particles violate the laws of physics. It's also why I like the saying "All the world's a stage, men, and women merely players."
What does all this have to do with Devolution? Because it is on this stage that we are engaged in what most of us understand as a spiritual war. We need to know how to fight it. It's a battle between good and evil. Part 2 will give us another important piece of our part in helping to win this war.
Part 2: Material Physics & Spiritual Physics
"We are not physical beings with a spirit, we are spiritual beings in an earthsuit." —Bill Gillam
Bill Gillam, Ph.D. was a clinical psychologist who was also an ordained minister. Like me, he had a keen interest in blending science with spirituality. The above statement has influenced my search for how to do just that. As pointed out in part one, everything in the world is energy at its most basic physical level. But if what I shared above is true, then all of it is made by and held together with spiritual energy, like a stage. This includes our physical bodies. In fact, no one can come into the physical world without an earthsuit. Even Jesus Christ had to have an earthsuit to come into this physical reality and interact with us.
The Bible is full of stories about demons coming into the physical world, and in every case, they had to hijack someone's Earth suit. The most well-known of those stories is about Legion, the group of demons in a man in the cave who was cutting himself and yelling profanities out of his mind. They called themselves Legion because they were many. They knew Jesus was going to cast them out and begged him to send them into a herd of pigs. He complied with that request and subsequently the entire herd of pigs committed suicide. They ran down the hill off the cliff and into the sea where they drowned.
I suspect they either did that because the darkness was more than they could bear, or Jesus had them do it because he knew the demons could not be in this material reality without an earthsuit. He didn't want them jumping out of the pigs into another person and starting all this again. My main point here is no one, but no one can come into this world that I call a stage without an earthsuit. The Bible calls it our flesh.
Since we are spiritual beings in an earthsuit, we have one foot in the spiritual realm and one foot in the physical realm, even if we don't know that to be true. To be here, we must have a physical earthsuit. I believe we are here to act out our life for a purpose. We are all merely players on the stage. Also, believe that it is on this stage that the battle between good and evil is being played out. We all have our own purpose, our own gift to give to the world. But collectively we are all in the fight whether we want to be or not!
Since we are here in this spiritual war, especially at such a time as this, we need to know how to fight a spiritual battle! There are two ways to fight this battle, according to the patterns of the world in our earthsuit, or according to the instructions on how to fight a spiritual battle in the book of truth, the Bible!
It is true that there is a time and a season for everything. While even in a spiritual battle, we need physical forces to fight for the light or be overcome by the darkness. However, we have trained professional soldiers in the military for that. And by the grace of God, we have the best military in the history of the world. While our brothers and sisters have to fight the physical fight according to the patterns of this world, many of them do so with spiritual weapons as well.
For those of us who are not trained soldiers, it is also our responsibility to protect freedom, each other, and our way of life. But we must fight another way - a better, more powerful way. We must fight it with our spiritual selves. We must become adept at spiritual warfare and the use of spiritual weapons.
If you look around in the world today, what do you say there's more of, good or evil? Most people I ask that question to say more evil by far. And it seems that evil doesn't even try to hide anymore. It stays out in the open right in your face! I believe I know the reason for that. When we see blatant injustice or downright evil, we get mad. We may even entertain revenge fantasies or curse the people engaging in it. In other words, we get in a very negative state.Â
Part 3: Fighting the Good Fight
When you think of the energy each of us allows to run through our brain and nervous system being pumped out into the world around us, consider the effect that has on the collective energy already in the world.Â
Since we are spiritual beings, the energy we emit into the surrounding physical reality is picked up by other spiritual beings, i.e. our collective spiritual consciousness. Not only does the energy coursing through our nervous systems affect our own Earthsuit, but it also affects the Earthsuit of everyone around us.
If there is more evil energy than good energy, when we get into that negative state and pump our own negative energy out into the world, we add to the collective evil energy in the world and take away from the good energy... And the enemy laughs!
Fighting a spiritual battle requires spiritual weapons. The weapons given to us by Jesus are faith, hope, and love. Love is the most powerful of the three! This is where we usually encounter a conflict between our physical being and our spiritual being. The physical part says ‘we will just get trounced and stepped on’ because using these weapons seems like bringing a knife to a gunfight! Faith, hope, and Love doesn't seem like enough to win a battle!
But those are only our offensive weapons. We must also use our defensive spiritual weapons which are included in the full armor of God given to each of us in that book of instructions...
The Helmet of Salvation
The Breastplate of Righteousness
The Belt of Truth
The Shield of Faith (to quench the fiery darts of the enemy)
The Sword of the Spirit which is the word of God
The Sandals of the Good News of the Gospel of Peace which is Jesus Christ!
Once we are all suited up in our defensive weapons, we need to bring our offensive weapons of faith, hope, and love to bear in our daily life. According to Luke 6:35, we are told, "But love your enemies and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be the sons of the Most High, for he himself is kind to ungrateful and evil people."
Matthew 5:43-44 says, "You have heard that it was said, 'you shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you; that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust."
Rather than fight one long spiritual fight, in a spiritual war, we will fight a series of battles. We need a place to rest and reset in between the battles. Psalm 91:2 and others like it give us that resting place. It says, "I shall say the Lord he is my refuge and my fortress, He is my God and Him I will trust!"
Having the faith to rely on these offensive weapons, defensive weapons, and the refuge provided by God is difficult to do because it's totally against what we do in the physical realm. It just doesn't compute to our physical nature in much the same way that Jesus' resurrection did not compute to the Apostle Thomas. He had to literally put his fingers into the wounds in the wrists and side of Jesus in order to believe it was really him. We are like Thomas and it makes perfect sense because we were born into this material reality and this is all we ever knew. We can see it, touch it taste it, smell it, and hear it!Â
Not so with the spiritual world! We have to apply the faith given to us by God. We are saved by grace, through faith, and that not of ourselves, but the gift of God. (Eph 2:8)
When we get up every morning we need to put on the armor of God and cover ourselves in the blood of Jesus. I think of that as charging our spiritual batteries in the same way as we are devoted to charging our cell phones every day. We can do that spiritual recharge with prayer, meditation, memorizing scripture, reading the bible, and praying some more!
