Forever in Shame, I am a sex addict in recovery

I am a female, middle age, in recovery for a sex addiction. I have been in recovery, although not always sobriety, for over 5 years. I'm having a hard time lately dealing with shame and the threat of being " found out".

You have taken a big step by coming here and expressing those fears. Whenever we express our innermost feelings in a safe place and a safe way it reduces the power of the fear.

The shame will remain until you begin to understand, and accept that addiction of any kind is a disease process, not a character flaw. I find myself constantly reminding people new to recovery of a saying I heard from David Ohlms, MD... "Shame is an inability to accept the disease concept of addiction."

Dr. Ohlms goes on to say "I don't hold my patient's responsible for having their addiction, it is a disease process! But once they are convinced they have it I do hold them responsible for doing everything they can to treat it. That means they need to get into and stay into a healthy recovery process."

Keep coming back! And if you are not already doing this, find a group of people such as Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) to connect with in your area. And get help from a qualified professional who specializes in addiction.

Glad you are here!
