Let’s say, for instance, a young latch-key boy came home from school everyday an hour before his single mother who had to work. They had an agreement that he would not open the locked door for anyone – not even her. So every day, an hour after he arrived home from school, the boy would hear footsteps on the landing followed by the sound of the key sliding into the lock on the door. Mother would step into the room and they would play a ritual game of "which hand is it in" while she held his favorite candy bar behind her back.
Now ten years later, whenever he hears a key sliding into a lock he begins to salivate. This is how the brain learns – by matching one pattern of experience with another. The two things are completely unrelated until the "link" or association between them is made.
The more two patterns are simultaneously repeated the stronger that linkage between them becomes. Now think about smoking and the powerful associations people make between the two; getting up in the morning, having a cup of coffee, at break time, driving the car, after meals, after sex, after a crappy day, etc. etc.
Every day smoking becomes more and more associated with everything we do. And those things we do then only feel natural if we are smoking while doing it. Kicking the physical dependence only takes 10 to 14 days. By the end of two weeks, nicotine is clear from your system. It’s the un-natural feel of doing those things without a smoke that sets up the craving – not the absence of the drug nicotine.
Intensity and/or repetition are the two primary mechanisms used by the brain to make such associations. The Smoke Free for Life™ Program uses both intensity & repetition to make changes to subconscious programming.

But in these cases the intensity of that news is enough to "get through" to the subconscious mind, convincing it that letting go of the need to smoke is for the best – willpower alone is not enough.
