Practicing hypnosis is one of the easiest things in the world to do because we all go into a "trance" naturally several times a day -- but there is this myth circulating around that hypnosis is always about going into a sleepy, relaxed state.
That's not so hard to understand when we think about it -- How many times have you been in a long workshop or seminar and realized you missed big chunks of what's been said? How many times have you driven a hundred miles and later realized you don't remember the trip?
We call it "zoning out" -- but its really an example of a naturalistic trance-state because your subconscious mind takes over as your conscious mind drifts off somewhere else. In hypnosis this is referred to as a "downtime trance".
But the same hypnotic principle also works in reverse. Perhaps you are familiar with what many athelete's refer to as "getting in the Zone" when they are performing their skills and working out -- this is referred to as an "uptime trance" because it still invovles hypnosis as the subconscious mind takes the forefront while the conscious mind goes off on its own creating "the Zone" effect.
