Is Internet-of-the-Mind fact or theory? Internet-of-the-Mind (IOTM) is a metaphor I use to talk about change and some basic neuropsychology of the mind. Both terms - "change" and "mind" - are highly abstract and open to strong debate in any conversation where they come up. I am not a neuroscience expert... I'm a therapist who has blended two decades of experience and learning into a model that makes sense to me. In these pages I stress -- and hopefully demonstrate -- over and over again that each and every one of us has our own "Map of Reality" or world view.
There are some things that we can agree on as reality -- such as a tree, or a chair, things we can see and touch -- a category of things we can refer to as "consensual reality".There are some things about the brain that we can now see due to technological advances in brain imaging and other areas. .. such as neural networks in action. But even those who are neuroscience experts readily admit that we know just the tip of the iceberg about how the brain works. I know just enough to be incredibly fascinated and thoroughly amazed. With Internet-of-the-Mind, I have blended what we are learning about the brain into my theoretical model of being human and helping others make the changes they want... This model has grown and evolved for as long as I have been a therapist. It will continue to grow and evolve over the coming months and years -- thats the exciting part! But it's still only MY model...other therapists have THEIR models and maps of "reality". This is the nature of diversity. My learnings and how I put things together will be helpful to some people but not others -- they will find what they need with someone else who has a more compatible world view. Where should I start and what is the best way to navigate the site? I have organized the website as if it were a networked database of information... If you click on a link it will take you not only to the relevant page, but to the specific location on the page where the linked information is contained. So you can start on any page you'd like according to your needs or area of interest and follow the links... If you get lost or want to go back to a certain topic but can't remember where it was -- just go to the Sitemap at the bottom of the navigation bar to view an outline of the pages and their headings. Just get used to clicking the back button to go back to where you were. I think anyone who has ever read a book where they had to keep flipping back through pages to review something will appreciate this feature. Or, if you are more sequentially oriented, you can start at the top of the navigation bar and read each page in order to the bottom of the navigation bar. What are the goals of Internet-of-the-Mind and for whom is it written? Internet-of-the-Mind is for anyone interested in its content. My goals are: - To use IOTM as a resource with my therapy clients. Many times a week or two in between sessions is a long time to wait. I feel that offering such a resource during therapy helps my clients get where they want to go much faster -- It's also a good follow-up resource after therapy ends for continued growth.
- To provide information and resources that might help others whether they be working on personal growth through self-help programs or involved in therapy.
- To pass on things that I have learned to other therapists, whether they be new to the field or just want to add some of these ideas and interventions to their current practice model.
- To somehow leave the world a better place by making whatever contributions I can to the common good.
